We all know that one of the most important factors in IPSC shooting is the gun recovery time. The faster you can get the gun back on the A's zone, the faster you can shoot (and hit) your 2nd A zone on the target. There are many techniques and products out there to assist the competition shooter with this. Double-Alpha is proud to endorse the Recoil-Master from STI. This New system is used by many of the top IPSC shooters in the World, including, Todd Jarrett, Max Michel, Chris Tilley, Saul Kirsch, Blake Miguez, and many others. Simply because this system works! Some fitting may be required, depending on your type of gun and slide cut. Read the instruction below for some guidance as to how to choose and fit the right system for your gun.
The best recoil system yet! Will reduce the felt recoil and muzzle lift, enabling you a faster 2nd shot.?
?
Heavy system is for 40sw Standard guns and the Light system is??usually the best choice for all open guns.?

Read below for more info on making your choice.
Choosing an STI Recoil Master
Each of the Recoil Master models is designed for a unique stroke and slide mass.
They are not necessarily interchangeable with guns of other manufacture with the
exceptions being 1911 models which adhere to the design and dimensions as
prescribed by the John Browning design. Weapons with stroke and slide
configuration, which do not match this criteria, are special due to slide
configuration and stroke limitations. That is to say a 3.9 and 4.15 Recoil
systems will not function on a Colt Officers model or other models of
manufacture which are 'short stroked' weapons
FACTS AS DISCOVERED IN TESTING
The Recoil Master is not caliber or power factor specific with the exception of
the 9mm. All 9mm systems must use the light system.
The differences between light and heavy will be influenced by shooter
perception.
Concerns over slide to frame damage have proven to be unfounded when using STI
frames and due to the unique ability of the guide rod cap and spring tube to
absorb wear. This is due to our hardness specification and may be a deciding
factor for other frames manufactured which do not meet our hardness criteria. In
this case, users should use the heavy system.
The recoil master is designed to last at least 10 times the service life of a
conventional recoil assembly without damage or weakening of the system.
TYPICAL USAGES and RECOMMENDATIONS
Guns other than 9mm with unmodified Unique or Classic slides should use the
heavy system.
Guns with 'tight' slides or new guns not fully broken-in should use the heavy
assembly.
Guns with lightened slides use the light system. All 9mm weapons should use the
light system. This applies to all lengths of Recoil Masters.
All Open guns should use the light system.
These recommendations reflect our conclusions formed after extensive testing.
Individual shooters will have varying preference due to shooting style and
variations in individual guns, especially guns not manufactured by STI
International.
ADVANTAGES TO THE SHOOTER
This system gives the shooter more consistent performance due to the design life
of system.
Due to advanced computer modeling, the system brings the gun back to point of
aim more quickly than convention recoil assemblies.
Due to proprietary design characteristics the chambering of rounds is more
forgiving of feed lip designs due to its' "Soft Touch" chambering.
Installing an STI Recoil Master
Upon receipt of your Recoil Master, there are a few checks which the shooter or
gunsmith should do to insure proper life of the system. For safety purposes, it
is recommended that a qualified gunsmith or other persons trained in the
assembly and teardown of weaponry do any type of modification to the gun. The
installation of the STI Recoil Master is as painless as disassembling the weapon
as would normally be done for cleaning purposes.
THINGS TO LOOK FOR
After disassembling the weapon, check the back of the reverse plug and spring
tunnel on the slide to insure that there are no steps. This includes the small
vestiges, which are above the bottom of the slide rails, and extend up to the
bore. These areas should be flat and square to the bottom of the rails.
Check the back wall of the dust cover, or guide rod head seat area on the frame
to insure that it is flat and square, and that there are no steps between this
wall and the front of the rails. If a step exists, you should machine this ledge
and the front of the rails to insure that they are on the same plane and square
to the rails.
Do not attempt to utilize the old standard reverse plugs as supplied with the
original recoil system. A new reverse plug has been provided to insure proper
function of the system and prevent overstressing of the spring.
After checking for the above items, the installation of the new Recoil Master is
as simple as installing any recoil spring. CAUTION: ALWAYS USE SAFETY GLASSES
WHEN INSTALLING SPRINGS INTO ANY FIREARM. Assuming that you have already removed
your slide from the frame, and that you have removed the recoil assembly and
barrel, the rest is simple.
Compress the Recoil Master using the reverse plug supplied with the system until
you can insert the TAKE DOWN tool between the head of the GUIDE ROD and the
front of the SPRING TUBE.
After installing the barrel back into the slide, turn the slide/barrel assembly
upside down and insert the Recoil Master into the spring tunnel on the slide. It
is not necessary to remove the TAKE DOWN tool until after you have reinstalled
the slide on the gun.
It is recommended that you take this time to re-oil the slide and at the same
time, you may wish to add a few drops of oil on the Recoil Master. Use of
lubrication is strictly a shooters preference and will not affect the Recoil
Master in any way.
Turn the slide assembly back over and install on the frame in the usual manner.
After aligning the slide stop with the link hole, you can now rack the gun and
remove the TAKE DOWN tool. Place the TAKE DOWN tool in a safe place for future
tear down and assembly.
Rack the gun a few times to check for any unseen interferences.
We hope you enjoy your new STI Recoil Master and good luck on the range.
